December:
California — OC (pepper) spray is being used by police officers world wide to restrain people who are considered out of control. However, researchers now suspect the spray can be fatal if the subject has been using drugs such as cocaine.
The results of a recent study from the California Medical Center in San Francisco may reinforce a suspicion held by critics of these sprays, namely that it can prove to be lethal for people under the influence of illicit or psychotropic drugs.
New York — A man who attempted to sell an engagement ring on Craigslist ended up getting pepper sprayed and robbed by the supposed buyer – a 65-year-old man with alleged Mafia connections. The incident occurred December 26 on Manhattan in NYC.
California — When Katie Holmes was leaving a Starbucks in Beverly Hills recently, her bodyguard reportedly threatened to pepper spray the paparazzi photographers if they didn’t get away from her.
If the body guard had released the spray, it would likely have affected a large group of holiday shoppers and children.
India — Pepper (OC) spray, a self-defense mechanism suggested by police in Chennai, is becoming popular among residents of several suburbs in the city.
It is said that at least 300 women and senior citizens have ordered the self-defense spray from the police.
Australia — An investigation was opened into the death of a 29-year-old man. He was arrested outside his Melbourne home before being bundled into the back of a police van. The man fought the police and was reportedly sprayed with capsicum foam before he died.
Canada — In Edmonton, a bus driver was hit with pepper spray Monday morning around 9:30 a.m. following a dispute over bus fare, police say.
Two male teenagers boarded the bus and engaged the driver in a discussion. The driver was then allegedly pepper sprayed and the suspects ran off.
Sweden — A wedding on Saturday in Malmoe in was cut short when police arrested the 24-year-old groom at the city hall, using pepper spray on him in the process.
The man, an Afghanistani refugee, was wanted by police after his application for asylum was rejected.
Israel — Immigration inspectors taking part in a routine arrest of illegal migrants were sprayed with pepper gas by two Indian nationals hiding in a Herzliya apartment Wednesday morning.
California — Authorities were searching for two men, one of whom pepper sprayed the other inside the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Santa Rosa and sent four others to the hospital.
Four men allegedly got into an altercation in the parking lot and dispute spilled into the office, auhtorities said.
India — Women walking on the streets of Chennai often face harassment or get their jewellery snatched.
Police have now started a new initiative, aimed at providing a sense of security to working women who keep late hours.
"We have given at least 10 pepper sprays to IT professionals staying in hostels and women staying alone after getting a proper petition and verifying that they need such a deterrent," a police official said.
Oklahoma — An overnight crash in Tulsa resulted from a passenger being sprayed with pepper spray. Officers said the driver and four friends were sitting in a night club parking lot when security asked them to leave.
One of the passengers got out and began arguging. That’s when he got sprayed with pepper spray and some of it got inside the SUV.
The driver tried to pull away, but ended up rear-ending the back of a semi truck.
California — On December 4, fans at (Swedish black metal band) Marduk’s show were reportedly pepper-sprayed by an overzealous security guard. The band was playing the Royal Hall in Los Angeles when, halfway through the set, a fan began trying to set a Bible on fire inside the club. The venue’s security responded, using pepper spray on the fan.
Naturally, the spray didn’t just effect its intended target. Several audience members were sprayed, forcing the band to leave the stage and sending choking fans running for the exits.
Canada — A would-be robber sprayed a Selkirk gas station clerk and customer with bear mace but was thwarted in the crime attempt when the victims fought back.
RCMP say the lone female suspect entered the gas station around 3 a.m. Saturday with bear mace and a knife. It’s alleged the suspect began spraying the employee and a customer but the customer managed to disarm the suspect.
The suspect attempted to escaped but was chased and caught by the customer and employee.
Australia — A 70-year-old man who used pepper spray to defend his home against a young man who he feared was breaking in has been convicted of using a prohibited weapon.
On grounds of self-defense, the man pleaded not guilty to possessing the banned product, but the magistrate said such a defense did not exist under the legislation.
The court heard how the defendant was threatened by a young man at his housing commission Parap flat in November 2008 after taking photos of the youth "wasting water".
November:
Illinois — A Cook County judge sentenced two men to two years in prison for "indirect criminal contempt."
The two men were the operators of a Chicago nightclub when 21 people died in a stampede.
On February 17, 2003, 21 partygoers were trapped at the club’s entrance after a security guard used pepper spray to break up a fight in the crowded club and people rushed to the door.
A robber, who autorities said held up a convenience store in Kanawha City (Charleston), West Virginia, probably needs to practise his aim.
The suspect — wearing sweat pants and a ski mask and armed with a knife and a can of pepper spray — tried to spray the store clerk with the chemical after he got the money.
He mishandled the can and sprayed himself. He then reportedly staggered away with his loot.
In two separate incidents, a store employee was attacked with pepper spray by shoplifters in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
One woman said she was attacked with pepper spray while trying to stop four shoplifters at a women’s clothing store.
Police said a different group of four women did something similar at another store Monday morning, spraying the manager who caught them stuffing merchandise into bags.
A Newport News woman was charged with a Halloween night assault that sent a 27-year-old man to the hospital.
About 6:45 p.m. a male resident in Hayes answered a knock at the door thinking it was someone looking for candy. But the woman – wearing a mask similar to the character of "Michael Myers" in the "Halloween" movies – sprayed pepper spray in the homeowner’s face before forcing her way inside.
A struggle ensued before the man was hit in the head with what’s believed to be a baseball bat, officials said. The woman fled before the man was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.
Police said a 22-year-old woman was walking along the street halloween night when she thought she was groped by a stranger.
She reportedly pulled out a pepper spray spray to fend off the alleged offender only to hit an innocent bystander in the face.
The woman was later tracked down after police got a description of the flamboyant costume she was wearing.
October:
Jamaica — The failure of government departments to allow a St Catherine company to import pepper spray or mace resulted in the Government being sued.
The company filed a law suit in the Supreme Court in July 2009, contending that it wanted the pepper spray to protect its employees against violent crimes which had been affecting them.
A man denied service Sunday night at a Mexican restaurant in Crystal Lake, Illinois shot pepper spray at the bouncer in the parking lot who blocked his entry, police said.
However, he missed his target and a 39-year-old female patron inadvertently walked through the mist instead, police said.
Police in Suffolk County, New York said a 22-year-old California woman took a cab from Manhattan to Long Island and then sprayed the driver instead of paying the fare.
The incident began Saturday when the woman arranged for the cabbie to drive her from Manhattan to Melville, Long Island.
The two allegedly agreed on a fare of $150 but when they got to the destination, the woman offered $80.
Police said that when the cab driver told her to pay the full fare she sprayed him in the eyes with mace.
Denmark — Police investigators said a 20-year-old Juelsminde man kicked his mother-in-law out of a party at his home Thursday and became angry when the woman returned.
The man reportedly grabbed a canister of pepper spray and emptied it in the woman’s face, police said.
A 48-year-old Live Oak, California woman was arrested on suspicion of pepper-spraying three members of a family at their home.
The woman went to the home after a dispute earlier in the day between her daughter and the othe family’s 16-year-old son, officials said.
When the father told the woman to leave the property, she sprayed him and his son with the pepper spray, then sprayed the mother, who tried to prevent her from entering the property through a gate.
UK (Scotland) — A 24-year-old beautician was listening to her iPod as she walked in the Telfer Subway, which links the Dalry and Fountainbridge areas of Edinburgh, at about 2:00 p.m. on February 16 when she had pepper spray squirted to her face, blinding her.
The attackers — Two Polish nationals (21 and 23) — then abducted their victim, forcing her to hand over her bank cards before repeatedly raping her.
Alabama — A 51-year-old woman who snatched items off a store’s shelves in Mobile Tuesday night pepper sprayed the store owner when he tried to stop her, police said.
But the owner took the woman’s walking cane and hit her over the head as she ran out the back of the store.
Officers soon found the woman stuck the the top of a fence behind the gas statio. The woman had seemingly tried to jump over the fence to escape, but became stuck.
Utah — About 3:45 p.m. Saturday, a man walked into a shop in Salt Lake City. He showed the employee a handgun under his coat and then reached across the counter to grab money and left, officials said Salt Lake.
The woman then went after him. But as she got close to him, he turned around and sprayed her in the face, officials said.
Ireland — Gardai (irish police) are reportedly "delighted" over their new pepper spray device which was used four times during the weekend in the Dublin area to subdue young men acting violently.
Texas — Port Arthur Police were investigating the second robbery during a short period in which the attackers used pepper spray on the victim.
Police said at about midnight a man was walking when two men walked up to him. One was carrying a gun and the second sprayed pepper spray into his eyes. The attackers took his cell phone and ran away.
Wisconsin — Sheriff’s deputies used pepper spray to subdue a Madison man who resisted attempts to take him to jail after a jury convicted him of attempted armed robbery and burglary, officials said.
Texas — A teacher at a Fort Worth charter school used pepper spray to break up a fight between two 16-year-old students. No injuries were reported in the 2 p.m. Wednesday incident.
September:
Norway — A female police officer in Larvik used pepper spray during an arrest of a 27-year-old man. However, she managed to spray another officer rather than the suspect.
Arizona — Three separate woman were attacked with pepper spray near downtown Tucson over a period of two weeks, according to Tucson Police.
All three cases were allegedly either robberies or attempted robberies.
Florida — A Bay County Sheriff’s deputy, who attempted to break up a fight between two women, was hit with pepper spray.
The incident occurred after a football game between two high school teams on Friday night.
As the deputy tried to pull the women apart, someone in the crowd reportedly sprayed him.
Maine — When a 10-month-old, tiny Chihuahua, began to bark Saturday morning in Exter, and when a 7-year-old girl looked outside to see why, she saw a female postal worker pepper-spraying her puppy.
The little girl ran outside and grabbed her dog, but in the process was sprayed in the face by the 57-year-old letter carrier, said the girl’s mother.
"My daughter went to pick up her puppy and she continued to spray," the mother said just hours after the incident. "The whole time the woman was mouthing off and swearing."
Colorado — A 77-year-old Westminster man was arrested, suspected of battery, after using mace to attack a 19-year-old man.
The victim said he let his dog out to go to the bathroom at his apartment complex when the older man walk toward him and stated "Get your dog off the lawn," and hit him with the mace spray.
Canada — A 43-year-old Toronto woman pleaded guilty to pepper-spraying a postie delivering the mail on December 18, 2008.
The male Canada Post employee was in the lobby of an apartment building when he saw a woman trying to get inside.
She tried opening the door, but when she found it locked she yelled unintelligible things.
After putting mail in the tenants’ boxes, the post carrier opened the door to leave and the woman stepped in, mumbled more unintelligible things and sprayed him.
August:
South Africa — Police reportedly had to use pepper spray on traditional healers who stormed the health department offices in Pretoria, attempting to force the director general to accept a memorandum.
In Canada, a 17-year-old Kingsville teenager reportedly is facing a charge of uttering death threats after confronting a mail carrier who hit their family dog with pepper spray.
The 17-year-old told the man he "was gonna kill him." "But I didn’t mean it," the teen said. "…You know what I mean?"
British police were called to a scene in Falmouth at 1:45 a.m. on Saturday. Reportedly, a 35-year-old man was using pepper spray on other people.
Police said that the man allegedly had been refused entry to a night club and was randomly spraying persons with what was believed to be pepper spray.
California — Two ice cream vendors in Salinas were victims in separate incidents after two men attacked them with pepper spray Monday
Two men approached the vendors a little more than an hour apart and sprayed them with pepper spray.
A 31-year-old man in Edmonton, Canada confronted the occupants of a unit in an apartment complex Sunday evening. He then produced a large bear spray can and fired off so much of the stuff he soaked himself as well as a dozen other people.
With tears in his eyes, the man stumbled to another apartment complex. There was reportedly so much pepper spray on the man and his clothes that six others were affected just from being close to him.
Wild turkeys are reportedly again attacking mail carriers in a Rockport, Massachusetts neighborhood after a seven-month break.
A turkey was recently seen chasing a U.S. Postal Service truck. When the mail carrier exited the vehicle, the turkey went after him. And despite the attempts to scare the bird off, the turkey continued its charge — before the mail employee responded with pepper spray.
Arizona — A Tempe mother has been charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly pepper sprayed her daughters when they tried to stop her from driving drunk.
Canada — An Alberta man was allegedly so upset about the quality of his corner-store sandwich that he pepper-sprayed the clerk.
Around 5 a.m., a man in his twenties came into the store to buy a sandwich, which he deemed to be "too hard," according to officials. The man became upset and threw the sandwich toward a garbage can. The employee asked the customer to leave, which he did.
However, he returned shortly after, wearing a black mask and wielding a can of bear spray. After spraying the employee in the face, he ran out of the store.
The Police in Turkey have denied a Postal and Telecommunications General Directorate request to provide its 4000 employees with pepper spray as a defense against robbery attempts.
The police based their rejection on the fact that PTT employees have not received training in the use of pepper spray.
July:
Vermont — Fifteen girls from a summer camp were sent to the hospital after a counselor accidentally set off a can of pepper spray.
The girls were on a bus headed back to their camp in Burke after a trip when the counselor reached down to pick up a can of bear spray (a large can of pepper spray that can be used against bears).
UK — A 24-year-old Polish man squirted pepper spray in a bouncer’s face after he was refused entry to a Cheltenham nightclub, a court heard.
Metro Transit Police in St. Paul, Minnesota said a female passenger sprayed mace at a driver Friday night.
"The young woman was seeking to get off the bus at a location that was not a bus stop. So the driver brought her to the next available stop and when she got off, she sprayed him," according to a Metro Transit spokesperson.
A man who claimed an employee of an automobile repossession company sprayed him with mace in the face after the employee allegedly attempted to repossess a car that was paid in full, filed a lawsuit July 6.
South Africa — A bank has reportedly fitted 11 of its ATMs across the Cape Peninsula with pepper spray to deter criminals from tampering with them.
The technology has been introduced to help prevent ATM bombings and card skimming after several machines were blown up during 2008.
However, the plan is not without its pitfalls. An ATM in Fish Hoek accidentally emitted pepper spray during a routine maintenance inspection over the weekend, and three people had to be treated after inhaling a cloud of the substance.
Lafayette Regional Airport was evacuated after a bottle of pepper spray burst in a piece of luggage early Tuesday morning.
UK — A 36-year-old man who took up a boxing stance and bounced around shouting at police "who is first," was pepper-sprayed by an officer after he refused to calm down.
Texas City Police said a 48-year-old man was accused of wrapping a large chain around the neck of his 15-year-old son before spraying him with mace Saturday morning.
Nebraska — A 19-year-old Lincoln man who tried to rob a 17-year-old girl with pepper spray and accidentally sprayed himself has been sentenced to a year of probation.
Denmark — One year after Danish police were allowed to carry pepper spray, a police watchdog expresses concerns cops are too quick to use it.
Adding pepper spray to police officer’s equipment belt has had mixed results on their use of force, according to new figures from the National Police.
Police were permitted to use pepper spray starting 2008, and while officers used their truncheons far less in 2008 than the previous year, pepper spray was used 1,449 times.
Oregon — Authorities said a 46-year-old man discharged a can of pepper spray at officers attempting to arrest him in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie.
Six officers were reportedly treated at the scene Monday for exposure to the spray.
June:
In Utah, Sandy police arrested a 32-year-old man after he threatened a bouncer with a knife on Saturday and then hit him with mace.
A teenage girl and two men were jailed after Sheriff’s deputies in Des Moines County, Iowa were led on a brief car chase Sunday morning.
The three suspects ditched their vehicle and took of on foot in the woods. The two male suspects managed to get on an ATV, and one allegedly tried to spray a deputy with pepper spray.
Florida — Manatee County Deputies arrested a woman who shot her brother with pepper spray during a domestic dispute, according to a report.
The 23-year-old female, reportedly got into an argument with her brother in his home on Sunday, over him breaking things in the kitchen.
After the argument, the brother said he walked past his sister’s room and she shot him in the face with pepper spray.
A state trooper accidentally hit himself with pepper spray while trying to subdue a drunken-driving suspect Sunday night at the Clayton Police Department.
During questioning, the suspect became agitated and tried to fight with the trooper, police said.
In Australia, a 25-year-old man from Cambridge Gardens has been found guilty of Customs charges and fined $10,000 for smuggling 16 canisters of pepper spray into the country, and for possessing a number of illegally imported anti-personnel sprays.
Meghna Sharma is one of many working women staying out till late in Pune, India. She said she feel the need for some kind of safety gadget that is handy and yet effective. To her, pepper spray is perfect for just that.
"I have seen a friend of mine use it once and I must say that it is really effective," she said.
A fast-food worker told a customer in the drive-through the restaurant was out of Diet Coke. This happened around 2 a.m. Monday in Columbia, South Carolina.
The woman then got mad and began throwing fries at the employee, according to a police report. The enraged customer then pulled out pepper spray and sprayed the worker in the face.

Allegedly, wasp spray can be used as an alternative to pepper spray.
A local police department in Texas reportedly recommended a woman to get a can of wasp spray rather than pepper spray. The wasp spray, they said, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you.
The wasp spray is said to blind an attacker temporarily until they get to the hospital for an antidot.

A Covington. Georgia woman found crying in the street was arrested when officers learned that rather than being an assault victim, she had in fact been the aggressor in a domestic dispute involving pepper spray and a handgun.
Police in Colchester, Vermont said two men robbed three people at a hotel.
Police said the men men, wearing ski masks broke into a room and then pepper sprayed two of the persons inside.
In Bremerton Washington,a man was allegedly angered by dirt blown onto his car. The enraged car owner ended up assaulting a 20-year-old landscaper with pepper spray, according to Bremerton police reports.
A Middletown, Ohio woman had just learned her roommate had died of natural causes when she became the victim of a home invasion and robbery. The woman was reportedly assaulted and beaten brutally by a man looking for her dead roommate’s money.
When the woman walked into her living room, she noticed someone standing behind her couch.
When she asked "who are you" the intruder sprayed her. "(…) this whole wall was covered with pepper spray," she said.
May:
A man was standing outside his Southside apartment in Jacksonville, Florida at 1:20 a.m. when four armed men in black masks came up and sprayed him with pepper spray.
When he tried to retreat inside the apartment, two of his roommates came out to see what was going on. They were hit with pepper spray as well when the door opened.
The robbers stole $3 from on ef the men’s wallet. The others said they couldn’t tell if anything was taken from them because of the pain from the pepper spray.
Those who defend themselves with firearms against bears suffered serious injury in about 50 percent of encounters. Those who used bear deterrent suffered far fewer and less serious injuries and were subjected to shorter durations of attack than those who defended with firearms alone.
You should know that the pepper spray sold as personal defense is not a bear deterrent; pepper spray is pretty much useless against bears.
Twelve high school students in Chicago, Illinos were hospitalized after someone released pepper spray.
The incident occurred at the Northwest Side school around 12:30 on Tuesday afternoon.

Malaysia — A Perak State Assembly Deputy Speaker and Jelapang assemblyman said the pepper spray device she had been accused of using on a Pakatan Rakyat representative during a recent chaotic Assembly was not hers.
The woman claimed the device had been flung at her earlier during the incident.
She said she does not even know how to use such a device, and that she had held it up to the assemblyman to demand if he was the one who had thrown it at her.
Police said a 43-year-old Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) man was charged with criminal domestic violence after trying to tase a woman and sprayed her with pepper spray.
The woman reportedly returned home and the man yelled at her, swung a taser while firing it and then sprayed her with pepper spray before leaving.
The man later admitted he sprayed her with pepper spray because she stayed out all night, according to a report.
A 21-year-old crime fighter from Milford, Ohio, has for the past four years been patrolling the streets of Cincinnati.
The costumed self-proclaimed superhero, who calls himself "Shadow Hare" is armed with pepper spray, handcuffs and a Taser. He said he is ready to perform citizen arrests, which are legal in Cincinnati.
April:
South Carolina — A Gaffney woman said that a meter reader sprayed her dogs with pepper spray and left one of them bleeding. The woman claimed she came home to find her three dogs "covered" in the spray.
She said the energy company agreed to send a meter reader to her home after 5 p.m. so that she could remove the dogs from the area where the meter is attached to her home. Instead, she said that the contractor came in the morning, while she was away from home and the dogs were in the yard.
A company representative said that one of the dogs tried to bite the contractor and acknowledged that the worker had used pepper spray on the dogs, but denied that the worker struck the animal.
A woman was reportedly arrested after starting a brawl at a Baptist church in Gallatin, Tennessee.
Police said the suspect got into an argument with two women and a church deacon and sprayed them with Mace.
12 students at a high school in Louisville, Kentucky were taken to a hospital after a substance was released in one of the school hallways. The incident began around noon near the school cafeteria. The substance was believed to be pepper spray.
California — A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s spokesman said a male followed a senior citizen as she walked to her car in Saugus just before noon.
The woman told deputies that the suspect approached her holding what appeared to be a can of Mace in his hand.
The woman quickly got in her car and slammed the door behind her. She began honking the horn to draw attention to the situation. The suspect then fled.
In Dallas, Texas, a high school was evacuated after security personnel attempted to break up a fight, using pepper spray that ended up getting into the ventilation system at the school.
A spokeperson said six students were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
A 34-year-old Tolono woman was robbed Saturday after a man sprayed her with pepper spray in Champaign, Illinois.
Police said the woman was at a gas station at 7:41 a.m. when a man walked up to her and began spraying pepper spray in her face. The man then grabbed her purse and took off.
A student reportedly sprayed pepper spray inside a 6th grade classroom at a school in Rochester, New York. The teacher immediately evacuated the classroom and called for help following the incident which occurred around 1:30 p.m.
Eight out of a total of eighteen of the children were bothered by the fumes and were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
An Osceola County, Florida corrections officer has been charged with child abuse after allegedly spraying a 13-year-old boy with pepper spray.
The victim allegedly was throwing a ball and went inside a residence. The that 42-year-old female officer approached him, pulled out her pepper spray and said, "Want me to spray you?"
After saying "no," the woman reportedly pushed him against a wall, then sprayed him in the face as he was trying to cover it.
In California, police said a Rocklin resident was pepper sprayed after confronting a female prowler in his house.
The residents’ barking dog reportedly awoke the husband and wife, at about 4:30 a.m. Police said the husband then confronted the intruder and a struggle ensued. The suspect squirted the man with pepper spray and fled.
At OSU in Columbus, Ohio, a 26-year-old man told police that he was assaulted after a man sprayed him with mace during a verbal altercation.
The man was said to complain of shortness of breath and pain in his ribs and lungs after being hit with mace. He was treated at the scene by a medic.
Peel Police (Toronto, Canada) said a masked robber thought nothing of pepper spraying a pregnant woman in the middle of a brazen daylight robbery in Brampton. The man sent a stream of the blinding liquid right at the five months pregnant employee.
The woman was quick enough to avoid the spray. She fled into the back of the store, where she immediately called police.
The conservative party in The Netherlands wants bus drivers to be equipped with pepper spray, in order for them to defend against violent attacks by passengers.

In Calgary, Canada, a man reportedly entered a northeast restaurant at 9 p.m. Tuesday night. He walked up to the counter and sprayed two female employees in the face with pepper spray. The man then demanded them to open up the cash till.
Several people felt the effects of the pepper spray and some literally ran outside to flush their eyes with snow.

Canadian police said suspects used pepper spray during an attempted home invasion in Mascouche, northeast of Laval about 10:30 p.m. Monday.
